With easy access to popular attractions and the natural beauty of Cheyenne Mountain right outside our door, it was the perfect place to relax, recharge, and enjoy the great outdoors.

Camping at Cheyenne Mountain State Park
Cheyenne Mountain State Park was the perfect home base during our stay in Colorado Springs. Located at the foot of the iconic Cheyenne Mountain, the park offers stunning mountain views, peaceful surroundings, and spacious campsites that make it easy to relax and enjoy the beauty of Colorado. Whether you're sipping coffee outside your RV in the morning or watching the sunset paint the mountains in the evening, the scenery is unforgettable.

The park is packed with amenities for campers, including full-hookup campsites, clean bathhouses with hot showers, laundry facilities, a playground, picnic areas, and a modern visitor center. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the more than 28 miles of hiking and biking trails that wind through the park's diverse landscape, offering opportunities to spot wildlife and take in breathtaking views. With easy access to Colorado Springs attractions while still feeling immersed in nature, Cheyenne Mountain State Park is a destination we'd gladly visit again.

A visit to the historic mining town of Victor, Colorado, feels like stepping back in time. As we explored the town, we enjoyed learning about its mining heritage and taking in the slower pace that makes this mountain community so special.

DAY TRIP: Phantom Canyon Road

Driving Phantom Canyon Road was one of the highlights of our Colorado adventure. The winding gravel road offered breathtaking canyon views, towering rock formations, and fascinating glimpses into the area's mining history. Along the way, we were excited to spot a bobcat in the wild, enjoy a relaxing picnic lunch at Dunnville Rest Stop, and explore the historic tunnels near the ghost town of Adelaide. With its combination of stunning scenery, wildlife encounters, and rich history, Phantom Canyon Road is a must-see for anyone exploring central Colorado.

DAY TRIP: Canon City, Colorado and Skyline Dr

Our drive to Canon City, Colorado, was filled with beautiful scenery, but the real adventure began when we made our way up Skyline Drive. This unique one-way road climbs high above the city, following a narrow ridge with dramatic drop-offs and panoramic views in every direction. As we carefully navigated the winding route, we were rewarded with breathtaking vistas of Canon City, the surrounding mountains, and the Arkansas River Valley. Skyline Drive is a short but unforgettable experience that offers a perfect blend of adventure, history, and some of the best views in southern Colorado.

DAY TRIP: Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument
A visit to the fossil beds near Florissant, Colorado, was like stepping back millions of years in time. We explored the fascinating fossil deposits, including the enormous petrified redwood stumps and remarkably preserved plant and insect fossils that tell the story of an ancient landscape. The beautiful mountain setting made the experience even more memorable, combining natural history with stunning Colorado scenery.

One of the highlights of our visit was touring the historic Hornbek Homestead, a family ranch that offers a glimpse into life on the Colorado frontier during the late 1800s. Walking among the preserved buildings and learning about the challenges and triumphs of ranch life added a rich human story to a day already filled with natural wonders.

Together, the fossil beds and homestead make Florissant a unique destination where history, science, and the beauty of the Rocky Mountains come together.
