Palo Pinto Mountains State Park is located near the town of Strawn in North Texas, approximately 75 miles west of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and 75 miles east of Abilene. Spanning nearly 4,900 acres in the scenic Cross Timbers region, the park features rugged hills, rocky ridges, wooded canyons, and the picturesque 90-acre Tucker Lake. Often referred to as the "Hill Country of North Texas," the park offers visitors a chance to experience breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the region.

The land that now makes up Palo Pinto Mountains State Park has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Indigenous peoples lived and traveled through the area for more than 8,000 years, leaving behind artifacts and evidence of early settlements. During the 1800s, the region became home to ranchers, settlers, and the Texas & Pacific Railroad, which helped shape nearby communities such as Strawn. Tucker Lake was created in 1937 by the Works Progress
Administration during the Great Depression and continues to serve as both a recreational area and water source for the city of Strawn. Texas Parks and Wildlife acquired the first portion of the property in 2011, and after years of planning and development, Palo Pinto Mountains State Park officially opened in 2026 as the first new Texas State Park in approximately 25 years. |
As Texas' newest state park, Palo Pinto Mountains State Park offers a wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities. Visitors can explore more than 16 miles of multi-use trails designed for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding while enjoying scenic overlooks and panoramic views. Tucker Lake provides opportunities for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and other non-motorized water activities. The park also features campsites for both RV and tent campers, picnic areas, wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and excellent stargazing thanks to its dark night skies. Whether you're seeking adventure or relaxation, the park offers something for every outdoor enthusiast.

No visit to Palo Pinto Mountains State Park would be complete without spending some time exploring the charming town of Strawn. During our trip, we were fortunate enough to visit during the town's Homecoming celebration, which brought an extra dose of small-town Texas charm and community spirit. The streets were filled with locals reconnecting, sharing stories, and celebrating their hometown traditions. While in Strawn, we made a stop at the legendary Mary's Cafe, famous throughout Texas for its chicken fried steak. After hearing so many rave reviews, we had to try it for ourselves—and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The hand-breaded chicken fried steak was one of the best we've ever had, making it the perfect meal after a day of exploring the park and surrounding area.

The Palo Pinto Old Jail Museum Complex is a fascinating stop for anyone interested in the history and heritage of this small Texas town. Built in 1883, the historic stone jail served Palo Pinto County for more than 70 years and offers visitors a glimpse into the early days of law enforcement and frontier life. Today, the complex has been preserved as a museum featuring historic artifacts, photographs, and exhibits that tell the story of the county’s settlers, communities, and way of life. The grounds also include other historic structures, creating a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the rich history that shaped Palo Pinto County. Located near the historic courthouse square, the Old Jail Museum Complex is a must-see addition to a day trip through Palo Pinto and a wonderful reminder of the stories hidden throughout small-town Texas.
