DESTINATION: Lake Ray Roberts, TX As the heat of summer finally started to fade, we figured there was no better time to hit the road and immerse ourselves in the crisp, refreshing air of early fall. In September 2024, we decided to take our RV to the Johnson Branch Unit of Ray Roberts State Park, located near Valley View, Texas. This serene park was the perfect spot to enjoy the changing seasons with a mix of outdoor activities, stunning views, and a relaxing atmosphere.

Arrival and Campground SetupThe drive to Johnson Branch was easy, and upon arrival, we were immediately struck by the beauty of the park. The trees were beginning to show the first signs of fall with just a hint of golden hues, and the weather was perfect for outdoor adventures—cool evenings but plenty of warm day time sunshine.
The campground itself is well-maintained, with spacious RV sites that offer both water and electric hookups. We chose a site that had a lovely view of Lake Ray Roberts, which made for a peaceful backdrop during our stay. There’s something about waking up to the sound of birds and the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze that makes it all the more enjoyable. |
Exploring the TrailsOne of the best parts about staying at Johnson Branch is the abundance of trails that wind through the park. We were eager to get out and explore the natural beauty on foot and by bike. The hiking trails offer a mix of short and longer routes, making it easy to find something for all skill levels.
We tackled the Johnson Branch Trail, a scenic 2.5-mile loop that takes you through wooded areas and along the lake’s edge. The fall colors were just starting to make their presence known, and the trail provided the perfect opportunity to take in the beauty of the changing landscape. In addition to hiking, the park also offers bike-friendly trails. We brought our bikes along and ventured out on the Pecan Creek Trail, which is a bit longer and provides a mix of paved and gravel paths. The cool weather made for an ideal ride, and we had the chance to take in even more scenic views of the park’s wildlife and tranquil waters. |
Fishing by the LakeOne of the main draws of the Johnson Branch Unit is its proximity to Lake Ray Roberts, which offers great opportunities for fishing. We decided to try our luck from the shore, and it didn’t take long before we felt the thrill of a catch. The lake is home to various fish species, including bass, catfish, and crappie, making it a popular spot for anglers of all skill levels.
We spent a few leisurely hours fishing from the shoreline and the kiddie pond, enjoying the calmness of the water and the peaceful surroundings. Even if we didn’t catch as many fish as we had hoped, the experience of being on the lake was rewarding in itself. We also noticed plenty of people out on their boats, taking in the stunning views and enjoying the water. |
Relaxing and Enjoying the Fall Atmosphere
While hiking, biking, and fishing were great ways to stay active, we also took plenty of time to relax and enjoy the fall atmosphere. There’s something incredibly peaceful about sitting by the water, watching the leaves change color, and breathing in the cool autumn air. We enjoyed evening campfires, roasted marshmallows, and star-gazing as the night sky lit up with the twinkling of distant stars.
The overall vibe at Johnson Branch was laid-back, which made it easy to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether we were soaking in the nature around us or simply taking it easy with a good book, it was the perfect place to unwind. |
